Cognitive Science Major Requirements Update - Winter 2026

PHI 13 + PHI 13D replacing PHI 13G

As of Winter quarter 2026, the Cognitive Science program has updated its core requirements following the discontinuation of PHI 13G, Minds, Brains, and Computers with Discussion (4 units). Beginning this term, PHI 13G has been replaced by two separate courses that together cover the same material in a revised format.

The new structure divides the former course into PHI 13: Minds, Brains, and Computers (3 units) and PHI 13D: Minds, Brains, and Computers Discussion (1 unit). Cognitive Science majors will be required to complete both PHI 13 and PHI 13D to satisfy the major’s foundational philosophy requirement.

Students who previously completed PHI 13G will not need to take the new courses. PHI 13G will continue to count toward the major requirement for all students who have already passed it.
