Research Opportunities (CGS 198/199)

If you are working as a Research Assistant in a Cognitive Science-affiliated faculty lab, see instructions here for getting units for your work (CGS 098/099/198/199).

Instruction

  1. Identify a Cognitive Science lab you are interested in working in. You can find a list of Cognitive Science-affiliated faculty here. You will need to contact the faculty member/lab manager directly to apply as a research assistant.
    • You can find other ways to apply to labs on the Psychology Research page.
    • Email the program director (Dr. Zoe Drayson, [email protected]) if you have questions regarding suitable sponsors.
  2. After you have been accepted into a cognitive science-related lab, please complete the YC Variable Units Course Form with your Lab Manager or Principal Investigator and email it to [email protected] to receive the Course Registration Number (CRN)
    1. Your instructor will let you know if are signing up for 98/198 or 99/198
    2. Only students who have completed at least 84+ units can register for 198/199
  3. Register for your intended units with the CRN in Schedule Builder by the 10th day of instruction

Unit Limitations

  • Students can enroll in a maximum of 5 special study units (099, 194H, 199) per quarter. If you plan to work in 2 or more labs in a single quarter, all the units combined together must be 5 units or less.
  • There is a limit on how many special study units overall can be applied to your degree. Please check with your college advisor to make sure are not exceeding this limit.
  • The units you are eligible for each lab depend on the number of hours you complete for the quarter.
    • 30 hours per quarter = 1 unit (3 hours/week on average)
    • 60 hours per quarter = 2 units (6 hours/week on average)
    • 90 hours per quarter = 3 units (9 hours/week on average)
    • 120 hours per quarter = 4 units (12 hours/week on average)
    • 150 hours per quarter =  5 units (15 hours/week on average)
